Data Center Substation Physical Designer

Job Overview HDR Engineering is seeking a Data Center Substation Physical Designer to join our nationally ranked Power Delivery team within the Substation group. The role involves using advanced Computer‑Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) skills to design mission‑critical, fast‑paced data center substations. Candidates will work on projects ranging from simple to moderately complex, with opportunities for growth into senior design roles.

Responsibilities

Work independently on substation design tasks, including CADD design, development of design drawings and documents, modeling and analysis, and preparation of material lists.

Prepare physical substation design drawings: General Arrangements, Sections, Grounding & Conduit Plans, and Foundation Plans.

Create substation material lists (BOM) with manufacturer part numbers, quantities, and footage.

Perform basic electrical calculations, reports, and designs for low, medium, and high‑voltage substations and systems.

Understand client standards and design criteria, exercising judgment on small to moderately complex projects under engineering review.

Manage most design responsibilities on simple projects independently; provide assisted design on moderately complex projects.

Communicate effectively with Project Managers, Project Engineers, and client personnel.

Key Qualifications

Technical degree or a combination of education and related industry experience.

Minimum 5 years of experience developing Substation CADD layouts and design.

Advanced skillset in 3D design software and document management infrastructure.

Advanced skillset in 3D coordination tools.

Competency with Microsoft Office products and communication tools.

Advanced understanding of engineering or architectural concepts.

Knowledge of industry standards and practices, including discipline codes and specifications.

Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and strong organizational traits.

Experience protecting and controlling high‑voltage substation design, including One Line Diagrams, Relay and Control Systems Schematics, and Wiring Diagrams.

Knowledge of NESC, IEEE, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards.

Extensive knowledge of major substation components and required drawings for constructing high‑voltage substations.

Comprehensive knowledge of physical substation layout, elevations, grounding, foundations, and conduit.
