Farm Manager - JPCREC Watkinsville

Position Summary The incumbent will be located at the JPCREC in Watkinsville, GA and will be responsible for managing many of the day-to-day operations of the JPCREC‑Watkinsville, including but not limited to managing all aspects of a 200+ head herd of beef cattle, managing all aspects of pasture and hayfield production, ensuring that the REC grounds, both at HQ and outer locations, are well maintained and project a positive image of the CAES. The farm manager will be expected to work closely with the REC superintendent, CAES faculty, and technical staff to coordinate complex research projects. The farm manager will work effectively with a wide variety of people in an effort to create an environment where researchers have the opportunity to conduct successful research. The farm manager will supervise full-time and temporary staff at the REC and will be expected to keep detailed and accurate records of all farm-related activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Effective communication and team‑building skills.

Working knowledge of animal husbandry (beef cattle), sprayer/spreader calibrations.

Working knowledge of farm equipment typically found on cattle and row‑crop farms.

Microsoft Office suite.

Physical Demands

Lift, push, and carry up to 100 pounds.

Work in environmental extremes and outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and wet.

Work around livestock, including dust, noise, smells, etc.

Work varied schedules according to the needs of the farm.

Driving as needed to perform job duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manages the REC’s beef cattle herd and all aspects of production for a 200+ head brood cow herd, including vaccinations, pregnancy checking, breeding soundness, and effective breeding of the herd.

Prepares the herd for research projects, maintaining herd replacements, yearling steers, and natural service breeding while using artificial insemination for replacement heifers.

Supervises a full-time employee and several part‑time/temporary student workers assisting with the cow‑calf operation and related research projects.

Coordinates bi‑annual inspections of the herd, pastures, handling facilities, and equipment by the IACUC, maintaining pastures and working facilities in compliance with IACUC requirements.

Keeps detailed records of all aspects of herd management for transparency and research purposes.

Manages pastures, hayfields, and forage production, including soil sampling, liming and fertilization schedules, harvesting, and baleage production to ensure adequate winter forage.

Builds and maintains fences and other restraint systems to keep cattle within designated pastures and safeguard public safety.

Ensures the grounds at JPCREC‑Watkinsville headquarters and other outlying areas are well‑maintained and project a positive image of the REC and the CAES.

Other duties as assigned.
