Overview
The Stamford History Center, also known as the Stamford Historical Society, is seeking an Associate Director of Research and Curation (part time). Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Associate Director serves as the chief historian and curator of the Stamford History Center, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non‑profit organization.
Responsibilities
The preservation, organization, and growth of the Center’s collection of artifacts and its research library.
Supervision of all research projects.
Curation of museum exhibits with attention to both historical accuracy/significance and aesthetic presentation.
Providing research assistance to visitors of the library, including historians, students, and members of the public.
Coordinating volunteers and their work.
Assisting the Board and/or Executive Director with planning and execution of special events.
Finding opportunities to display the Center’s collection in the form of mini‑exhibits in public spaces (e.g., schools, public libraries, the Stamford, CT Government Center).
Assisting the Executive Director in grant writing.
Working with the Education Coordinator to prepare materials, etc., for school visits.
Maintaining collegial relationships with staff of neighboring institutions.
Compliance with the directives of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director.
Qualifications
A clear vision for the research and curatorial work of the Stamford History Center.
An advanced degree in history, American Studies, Museum Studies, or a related field.
Experience as a local historian.
Training in curation (or a willingness to undergo such training).
A connection to the Stamford, Connecticut community and knowledge of its history.
A hands‑on leadership style.
Grant‑writing experience and knowledge.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
An ability to form meaningful, productive working relationships with volunteers and staff.
