Job Overview
The Accounting Assistant will perform bookkeeping and accounting functions in support of the Michigan Department of Corrections Business Office, including posting financial data, preparing invoices and vouchers, and maintaining account balances. The role requires knowledge of MDOC policy directives and experience with SIGMA or COMS accounting systems.
Responsibilities
Receive, sort, correct, and reconcile a wide variety of accounting documents.
Post data to appropriate accounts, review and code financial information, make payments, and maintain records on a daily basis using spreadsheets, database software, COMS, and SIGMA.
Communicate professionally with vendors and staff both verbally and in writing.
Follow state accounting procedures and MDOC policy directives.
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.

Accounting Assistant 5 – no specific experience required.
Accounting Assistant 6 – one year of administrative support experience.
Accounting Assistant E7 – two years of administrative support experience, including one year equivalent to an Assistant 6, involving posting financial data to ledgers, preparing invoices and vouchers, reviewing and coding financial information, and maintaining account balances.
Accounting Assistant 8 – three years of administrative support experience, including one year equivalent to an E7, with the same responsibilities as above.
Knowledge of MDOC policies, SIGMA/COMS operations, and state accounting processes.
Additional Requirements
Certain positions may require a criminal history background check.
The Department of Corrections may screen out applicants convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017.
Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.
