
Collections Specialist

Position Overview
Join the City of Baytown as a Collections Specialist where you’ll play a key role in securing overdue payments, resolving customer billing issues, and maintaining accurate financial records. You’ll engage one‑on‑one with residents and customers, offering respectful support while helping them find payment solutions. Key Responsibilities
Respond to all questions regarding utility collections and assist with billing operations as directed by the Collections Supervisor or designee.
Receive payments by mail and in person as teller, collect funds of any nature for the City, balance the cash drawer daily, document all payments received, and audit transactions from the customer or payment level to the deposit. Issue reconnect work orders.
Research and correct returned utility billing mail.
Perform all other duties as required.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
Two years of customer service or general office experience in accounting, balancing, reconciling and maintaining financial records OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or institution.
Accounting software experience.
Other Requirements Ability to multitask, establish priorities, work independently, and maintain organization. The role requires continual attention to detail in entering, composing, typing, and proofing data and materials. Knowledge of business machine operations, personal computers and related software, and accounting/billing processes is required. Must have a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations with both internal and external customers, and demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy when interacting with co‑workers and the public.
Additional Information Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require overtime. The position provides services or performs duties for the general public during emergency situations, including evacuation scenarios.
Physical Demands Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
