Collections Specialist

Join the City of Baytown as a Collections Specialist where you'll play a key role in securing overdue payments, resolving customer billing issues, and maintaining accurate financial records. You'll engage one-on-one with residents and customers, offering respectful support while helping them find payment solutions. Bring your strong communication skills, attention to detail, and drive to help our community stay financially healthy! The Collections Specialist receives payments by mail and in person as a teller. Collects funds of any nature. Balances the cash drawer daily. Documents all payments received. Audits transactions from customer or payment level to deposit. Performs administrative duties to support the department's overall mission. Uses/requires office skills to handle: customer service/communications (internal and external), file organization and management, computer skills including data entry, word processing, spreadsheets and databases, mathematical computation, reports and decision making within the scope of responsibility. Respond to all questions regarding utility collections. Assists with utility billing operations as directed by Collections Supervisor or designee. Receives payments by mail and in person as teller, collects funds of any nature for the City. Balances the cash drawer daily. Documents all payments received and audits transactions from the customer or payment level to the deposit. Issue reconnect work orders. Researches and corrects returned utility billing mail. Performs all other duties as required. Required: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). Two years customer service or general office experience in accounting, balancing, reconciling and maintaining financial records OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: Bilingual in English/Spanish. Associate's Degree from an accredited college or institution. Accounting Software experience. Ability to multitask, establish priorities, work independently, and maintain organization. Work requires continual attention to detail in entering, composing, typing and proofing data and materials. Knowledge of business machine operations, personal computers and related software, and accounting/billing processes. Must have a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations with both internal and external customers. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public.
