Role Description Reporting to the RCO Manager, the Peer Specialist is responsible for providing non-clinical, evidence-based support services for NAMI’s Recovery Community Organization (RCO) serving Manatee County. The RCO is a peer-led recovery support and harm-reduction service offered to individuals impacted by substance use disorders (SUD). The program will be designed to increase engagement in recovery support, reduce overdose risk, improve access to treatment and housing, and promote long-term stability for individuals and families in Manatee County. The main responsibility is to adhere to the mission statement of NAMI Sarasota and Manatee Counties – to improve the lives of individuals with mental illness, as well as the lives of their families and caregivers, through support, education, awareness, and advocacy. Tasks performed as a Peer Specialist focus on assisting individuals with wellness, promoting recovery, and supporting whole health.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field; or a High School Diploma/GED with at least two years of experience.

Lived experience: self-identified current or former user of mental health or co‑occurring services as a minor or transitional‑age youth who can relate to the population served.

Experience with social marketing, public speaking, and facilitation/training preferred.

Certified Recovery Peer Specialist preferred, or willingness to obtain certification within one year of employment.

Training: Recovery Capital, WRAP®, WHAM/Peer Support Whole Health & Resiliency, High Fidelity Wraparound, NAMI Connections Recovery Support group facilitation, preferred, or commitment to receive NAMI‑required training.

Knowledge of local behavioral health and community systems; Recovery Principles, practices, and tools.

Abilities: listen to anecdotal information and reframe in context of facts and data while maintaining empathy; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; work independently and in teams.

Qualities: empathy; positive attitude; strong sense of self‑awareness; prioritizes self‑care; willingness to learn and grow; awareness of and sensitivity to the service population’s culture and socioeconomic characteristics.

Licensure: current valid driver’s license.
