Position Overview. Salary range: Exempt Junior Specialist Step 1: $55,000/yr, Step 2: $58,600/yr. Non‑exempt Junior Specialist Step 1: $26.35 per hour, Step 2: $28.07 per hour.

Position Description The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites qualified Junior Specialists in Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Care to join short‑term, two‑year appointments based on research project needs.

Research in Specialized Areas (80%) Junior Specialists will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on pediatric emergency care and will assist the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) research staff with clinical studies conducted in the Emergency Department.

a. Review and maintain competencies of study protocols and procedures for Emergency Medicine and PECARN studies in startup and enrollment phases.

b. Participate in screening, recruitment, and enrollment of Emergency Department patients into approved research studies.

c. Conduct study procedures including data collection (interviews/questionnaires), abstracting data from electronic medical records, inputting data, storing and shipping samples, performing patient follow‑up activities, and resolving data queries.

d. Review literature for background information, emerging science, research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to their sub‑specialty.

e. Participate in training for enrollment and data collection activities, including innovative diagnostic equipment, neurocognitive testing, and other follow‑up testing; develop expert skills in assessing patients and coding/scoring assessments performed by others.

f. Participate in dissemination activities to support an application for federal exemption from informed consent for emergency research.

Professional Competency and Activity (15%)

a. Complete and maintain IRB‑required education and study‑specific training for clinical research.

b. Attend and participate in Emergency Medicine Research‑In‑Progress forums, PECARN network teleconferences, and regular study meetings with the PI and other investigators.

c. Participate in the PECARN Research Coordinator Advisory Committee as appropriate and complete assignments delegated by this committee.

d. Participate in protocol reviews for new studies and provide substantive feedback on content and implementation.

University and Public Service (5%)

a. Participate in presentations to the academic community, lay community, and service providers for participant recruitment and public disclosure activities.

b. Participate in activities of committees within the department, School of Medicine, campus, and other University entities as appropriate.

The position will be located primarily in the Emergency Department. Work hours will be arranged, but evening and some weekend hours are required. Restricted vacation will occur during peak periods.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related field with a minimum of 6 months experience in laboratory, clinical, or applied research.

Completion of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Biomedical Researchers and Good Clinical Practice training programs within 30 days of hiring.

Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and resourcefulness with a diverse population of patients and families.

Ability to read and understand clinical protocols with careful attention to detail and to implement a broad range of activities as specified by study protocols.

Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills to provide clear information and instructions to patients, families, physicians, hospital staff, and a variety of health‑care professionals.

Ability to read and understand patient medical records, abstract clinical data from records, and record accurately on case report forms or electronic databases.

Display organizational skills to coordinate multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and maintain thorough and accurate study documentation.

Computer skills sufficient to use MS Word, Excel, web interfaces, patient or research databases, and electronic health record systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Some classroom experience in laboratory, clinical, or applied research.

Work or volunteer experience in an Emergency Department setting.

Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and procedures to interpret and compile data according to study protocol.
