Your role and responsibilities Global Tax is seeking a Senior Tax Advisor with focus on Compensation and Benefits Global (C&B). This is a dynamic role providing support to the C&B Team as well as advice and counsel to a diverse set of internal clients regarding IBM’s executive compensation, global payroll and corporate tax compliance and optimization of IBM’s compensation and benefits plans, policies, and programs.

You will collaborate closely with Payroll, HR, Legal, Accounting, and other cross‑functional teams on matters involving acquisitions and divestitures, executive and deferred compensation, equity programs, reward and recognition initiatives, benefit plans, travel and expense reimbursements, and tax authority audits. Your work will involve interpreting and applying tax rules to real‑world business scenarios, often involving complex or evolving fact patterns.

A key part of your responsibilities will include supporting the design and optimization of compensation and benefits programs—such as stock options, restricted stock units, retirement plans, executive pay arrangements, and other employee reward programs—while ensuring compliance with U.S. and global tax laws, including IRC Sections 83, 162(m), and 409A. You will advise on tax implications related to M&A activity and help assess reporting and withholding obligations across multiple jurisdictions.

You will provide technical tax guidance to senior leadership, including CFOs, CHROs, CTOs, and other stakeholders, delivering clear, actionable tax positions tailored to each audience. You will also have opportunities to work with internal and external global tax advisors on emerging issues, best practices, and strategic planning.

Key areas of focus

Equity compensation (restricted stock, RSUs, stock options)

Retirement and deferred compensation plans (401(k) and nonqualified plans)

Fringe benefits and the tax treatment of employee perks and welfare benefits

Global mobility and cross‑border compensation considerations

Required education Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred education Master’s Degree

Required technical and professional expertise

At least 5 years of tax advisory experience.

Experience with the Compensation & Benefits (C&B) Tax function and providing guidance to the C&B team and internal stakeholders.

Experience with advising on executive compensation, global payroll, and corporate tax compliance.

Experience with supporting the optimization of compensation and benefits plans, policies, and programs.

Experience with partnering across Payroll, HR, Legal, Accounting, and other cross‑functional teams.

Experience with delivering clear written and oral tax advice tailored to different audiences.

Strategic Communication Skills: Experience in communicating complex tax concepts and data analysis outcomes to senior management and external stakeholders, negotiating and influencing to drive business results.

Preferred technical and professional experience

Big four experience is preferable.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Proven proactive approach to tasks and problem‑solving.

Ability to learn new concepts and processes quickly.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
