
Senior Database Developer

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a talented Senior Database Developer for a Remote, Full‑Time role within the Veterans Affairs (VA) Department.
Responsibilities
Establish database management systems, standards, requirements, guidelines, and QA for deliverables such as conceptual design, architecture, logical database, capacity planning, data interfaces, loading and maintenance plans, and security policy.
Translate business requirements into a logical model that accurately reflects the client’s ERDs and data flow.
Convert the logical model into a physical model, creating and maintaining schemas, tables, columns, views, and reports.
Recommend strategies to maximize performance, support storage requirements, enforce data governance, and maintain recovery procedures.
Participate in QA and develop test application code within a client‑server environment.
Qualifications Experience (8+ years)
Proven track record with complex database systems and data warehousing solutions.
Experience in database design, architecture, and data modeling.
Proficiency in SQL programming and query optimization.
Strong knowledge of DBMSs such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
Experience with tuning, indexing, and query optimization techniques.
Ability to write and troubleshoot complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers.
Familiarity with ETL processes and tools (SSIS, Informatica, Talend).
Understanding of data warehousing concepts and technologies.
Knowledge of backup and recovery processes.
Experience with database security, user roles, and permissions.
Proficiency in scripting (Python or PowerShell) for database automation.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Capability to work independently and as part of a team.
Attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality work.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Understanding of business processes and requirements gathering.
Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to junior developers.
Desired Experience
Electronic Data Interchange X.12 medical claims (837, 834, 277, etc.).
Experience with T‑SQL and a high‑paced DevOps environment.
Experience working with remote U.S. based teams (not offshore).
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or related discipline.
Familiarity with cloud database solutions (AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database).
Experience with version control systems (Git).
Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or another engineering/technical discipline.
Citizenship
U.S. Citizenship is required for this specific opportunity.
