Your Opportunity As an Entry-Level Fire Protection Designer, you will support the design, analysis, and documentation of fire protection and life safety systems for a variety of building types. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, you will collaborate with experienced engineers and designers to deliver code-compliant, high-quality solutions across sectors including healthcare, education, commercial, and science & technology.

This role provides hands‑on experience across all phases of project delivery—from conceptual design through construction administration—while building the foundation for professional licensure (PE).

Your Key Responsibilities

Assist in the design and layout of fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and clean agent suppression systems

Perform basic engineering calculations including hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, and system flow analysis

Support development of construction documents, drawings, and specifications using Revit/BIM

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, architectural) to coordinate system integration and routing

Review shop drawings and submittals for compliance with design intent, codes, and project specifications

Assist with building and fire code analysis, including application of NFPA standards and life safety requirements

Participate in site visits to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress

Support preparation of reports, technical documentation, and design narratives

Assist with project coordination, scheduling, and communication with internal teams and external partners

Contribute to quality control processes and uphold Stantec’s standards for technical excellence and safety

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Basic understanding of fire protection engineering principles, fluid dynamics, and system design

Familiarity with NFPA codes and standards and life safety design concepts

Proficiency in Revit (required); AutoCAD and BIM experience is a plus

Exposure to fire modeling tools (e.g., FDS, CFAST, Pathfinder) is a plus

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Detail‑oriented with a commitment to producing high‑quality work

Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification preferred, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire

Eagerness to learn, grow, and pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering (preferred), Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering discipline from an ABET‑accredited program

0–2 years of experience in fire protection, plumbing, or building systems design (internship experience preferred)

Exposure to building systems design, code analysis, or consulting engineering environments is a plus
