Role Summary
Our client, a well-established and highly profitable regional public accounting firm, is seeking a Tax Director to join its growing team. The Tax Director will provide technical leadership, oversee complex tax engagements, and manage client relationships while contributing to firm growth and staff development.
Key Responsibilities
Perform technical review and approval of complex tax returns and oversee governmental tax examinations
Serve as a subject matter expert within tax and applicable industry areas
Manage client engagements to ensure timely delivery within budget
Take full ownership of large and complex tax engagements, delegating work as appropriate
Participate in client meetings and lead tax planning initiatives
Collaborate with other departments on large client engagements
Maintain direct client service responsibilities and oversee delegated accounts
Monitor and communicate tax law developments impacting clients
Manage and delegate tax examinations; represent clients before taxing authorities as needed
Oversee billing and collections to ensure accuracy and timeliness
Stay informed on economic and legislative trends affecting taxation
Conduct research on tax software and provide recommendations
Contribute to business development through networking and industry involvement
Participate in additional projects as requested by leadership
Travel occasionally for client meetings, seminars, and on-site work
Work extended hours during peak tax season (January–April), including 55+ hours per week as needed
Required Qualifications
7–10 years of progressive experience in public accounting with increasing responsibility in tax
Experience representing clients before taxing authorities (minimum 2 years)
Prior experience supervising and reviewing the work of tax staff (minimum 1 year)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required)
Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in good standing
Membership in the AICPA (or equivalent professional body)
Completion of at least 40 hours of continuing professional education annually
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Taxation or related field
Broad tax experience, including exposure to estate and trust taxation
Supervisory Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and develop tax staff across multiple levels
Assess staff capabilities and coordinate training and development plans
Participate in performance reviews and departmental evaluations
