Position Overview
Photographer plays a vital role in visually documenting, interpreting, and communicating the mission, culture, and operational environment of a high-visibility Navy customer. This position is responsible for producing high-quality photographic content that enhances communication effectiveness, strengthens organizational identity, and supports both internal engagement and external outreach. Photography serves as a powerful storytelling tool, capturing real-world operations, personnel, and events to convey authenticity, credibility, and impact. Through compelling imagery, this role helps translate complex technical environments into accessible, engaging visuals that resonate with diverse audiences, including leadership, workforce personnel, industry partners, and the public. Working within a dynamic and historically rich environment such as the Washington Navy Yard, the Photographer contributes to showcasing mission execution, commemorating milestones, and supporting outreach initiatives, while reinforcing the Command's brand and cultural identity.
Responsibilities
Capture high-quality imagery of events, ceremonies, operations, and personnel that communicates mission impact, preserves historical record, and supports strategic messaging.
Produce and deliver photographic content optimized for digital signage, websites, social media, and internal communications platforms, ensuring consistency and adaptability across formats.
Create imagery that reflects both technical excellence and the human element of the Command, highlighting innovation, teamwork, heritage, and community engagement.
Collaborate with stakeholders to define objectives, identify key moments, and plan shoots, including location scouting, shot lists, and scheduling to ensure efficient execution.
Edit, retouch, and format images to meet professional standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and visual appeal while maintaining authenticity.
Ensure all imagery aligns with Navy branding, style guidelines, and security protocols, including proper use of insignias, environments, and subject representation.
Work closely with Government representatives, designers, videographers, and subject matter experts to ensure all visual products meet communication objectives and technical accuracy.
Operate and maintain professional photography equipment, manage file organization and archiving, and ensure all deliverables meet quality control and compliance requirements.
Required Skills and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Photojournalism or a related field with at least four (4) years of experience, OR at least six (6) years of relevant professional photography experience with a bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience in event, portrait, and documentary-style photography, particularly in structured or high-visibility environments.
Proficiency with professional photography equipment and editing software (primarily Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom).
Strong understanding of visual composition, lighting techniques, and storytelling principles.
Ability to translate complex or technical subject matter into clear, compelling visual narratives.
Knowledge of file management, archiving, and metadata standards.
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly in Government or military environments.
Familiarity with security protocols and handling of sensitive environments or information is preferred.
Ability to work effectively remotely in cross-functional teams.
Ability to meet deadlines and produce quality work.
Proficient in Microsoft Suite software including Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
Clearance Requirements U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
Work Location Washington, D.C. - Onsite.

Compensation The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $87,000. Salary will be set based on experience, geographic location, and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
