Mission The Bureau of Environmental Disease Prevention strives to prevent environmental disease in homes, communities, and workplaces by promoting healthy environments and health equity.
Responsibilities
Develop and manage activities related to the Program’s field operations
Prepare reports, presentations, and work plans
Participate in protocol development; recommend and implement improvements of existing unit protocols
Identify required permits/certifications for field staff and assist in obtaining and maintaining all necessary permits/certifications
Interpret NYC Health Code Regulations and Program policies to ensure consistent application of regulatory requirements
Respond to oral and written inquiries from the public and other City Agencies regarding inspection policies and procedures
Supervise Associate Public Health Sanitarians levels I & II
Assist with personnel management, recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new staff
Take corrective action when needed to maintain unit performance at a satisfactory level
Perform special inspections and investigations in difficult or unusual situations and take appropriate corrective action
Maintain all patient/medical documents in a confidential manner
Enforce City, Department, and Program rules, requirements, standards, and regulations
Preferred Skills
Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Strong technical and scientific competencies related to environmental health
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with at least 30 semester credits in physical and/or biological sciences (not more than 12 of which may be in applied sciences) and at least two years of full‑time experience performing inspections to assure compliance with relevant laws and regulations; OR
Associate’s degree with 15 semester credits in physical and/or biological sciences (not more than 6 in applied sciences) and four years of full‑time experience; OR
Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with a minimum of 60 semester credits, including at least 15 in physical and/or biological sciences, and at least two years of experience as a public health sanitarian.
