
NATURE CAMP ASSISTANT- SEASONAL

Overview
Cary is seeking energetic, creative, and top-quality individuals who are enthusiastic about teaching nature and working with elementary-aged children to serve as a Seasonal Nature Camp Assistant. Candidates must be available to work an average of 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Staff will assist with facilitating age‑appropriate nature themed activities and programs for campers in grades K‑5; purchasing and monitoring inventory for their programs; and driving a Town of Cary vehicle as needed. May perform administrative work as needed.

Hemlock Bluffs Camp Assistant Off‑site Camp Activity Specialist (will support camp activities at Bond Park Community Center and Mills Park)
This is a seasonal (May‑August), non‑benefited position, approximately 30‑40 hours per week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
Responsibilities
Assists with the supervision and safety of all summer camp participants and activities.
Uses group management skills to engage all children in daily activities.
Takes initiative and properly identifies opportunities to help.
Assists with camp opening and closing, including camper drop‑off and pick‑up.
Sets up, takes down, and cleans/sanitizes group equipment.
Stays within our 1:12 staff to camper ratio.
Assists with implementation of camp activities.
Carries out behavior management procedures and handles camper emergencies.
Plan and implement age‑appropriate recreational and educational activities to keep children active and help them develop skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Follow through and deliver high level activities in addition to the regularly scheduled programs.
Prepares, organizes, and supervises facilitation of program activities.
Assists with development of the schedule, coordinates space, identifies resources and plans developmentally appropriate activities.
Documents and submits incident and accident reports to supervisor.
Researches and gathers resources for programs.
Performs other job‑related tasks as required.
Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee is subject to noise, during events and activities, but generally free from additional work hazards.
Qualifications
General knowledge of traditional camps
General nature knowledge
General knowledge of equipment and supplies required for camp operation
Good organizational and time management skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to acquire knowledge of Town of Cary policies, procedures, and services of the department
Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with general public and with other staff
Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
Ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of camp attendees.
Some knowledge of instructing programs or nature interpretation
Ability to work independently and complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline
Ability to interact with the public tactfully and constructively and provide top‑notch customer service
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
Requires a CPR/First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain one within 6 months with supplied training).
Must be at least 18 years old
Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:
Some experience in an outdoor camp or experience working in a camp, school or childcare facility.
Some experience in creating or delivering nature programs.
Physical Requirements Work in this class requires the ability to be physically active and to stand for long periods of time. Work requires the employee to be able to work outdoors in challenging conditions, such as heat and humidity. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.
Conditions of Employment Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI fingerprinting, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
