The salary range is between $47,476 and $58,234, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data. Position Objective The Assistant Director will evaluate applications for admission and make decisions on the admissibility of candidates. The role interprets and explains admissions decisions to parents and students, interprets and explains university programs and policies, and identifies appropriate exceptions to normal processes. The Assistant Director conducts evaluative interviews of prospective students, plans and executes recruitment travel based on data analysis, builds relationships with high school counselors, offers information sessions on and off campus, and represents all facets of undergraduate education and student life to prospective students, parents, and guidance counselors. All prospective students are treated equally, without regard to race, religion, age, sex, color, disability, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin. This position is eligible for hybrid/remote work arrangements.

Essential Functions

Make decisions on the admissibility of candidates applying for undergraduate admission. Analyze and interpret transcripts, standardized test scores, essays, interview reports, and letters of recommendation; synthesize this information to predict the likelihood of success at the university. Make admission decisions based on academic program, extracurricular activities, quality of high school, test scores, and demographic information. Evaluate candidates relative to enrollment goals; identify special cases requiring director review. The Assistant Director has authority to decide on approximately 95% of admission cases (35%).

Answer incoming calls and emails from parents, students, and counselors while working in the Undergraduate Admission contact center. Orally and in writing, interpret and explain the university’s curriculum, culture, campus atmosphere, admission and financial aid policies, and admission decisions. Calm upset, disappointed, or angry callers (22%).

Contact individual high schools to schedule visits, prioritize when conflicts arise, and coordinate alumni events. Book airline, lodging, and transportation; reconcile expenses following university travel guidelines; execute travel plans, including international travel. (12%).

Perform special projects assigned by the director, including management of events, tour guide program, recruitment, international recruitment, student recruiting teams, training of recruiters, budgeting, scholarship programs, liaison duties, and communication of admission updates to the department. Facilitate presentations and information sessions for special groups. (10%).

Interview prospective students, evaluate fitness for university, document evaluation reports, advise students and families on curriculum, testing, and opportunities. Interpret student experiences and goals to advise on suitability for the university and the path toward achieving those goals (8%).

Nonessential Functions

Initiate, develop, and cultivate strong partnerships with high school counselors; articulate profiles of competitive students, explain admissions decisions to counselors, stay current on admission and higher education trends, and be an expert on the university and admission office (4%).

Lead information sessions on and off campus; represent the university confidently, customize presentations to audience needs, listen closely to concerns, and answer questions, even if not articulated well (4%).

Using historical applicant data, current inquiry data, and external data sources, identify high schools to visit for recruitment and relationship building; assess college fairs for return on investment and incorporate into travel itinerary (4%).

Perform other duties as assigned (1%).

Contacts

Department: Daily contact with all department staff to review applications and collaborate on special projects.

University: Regular contact with faculty and staff across the university during open houses and special events for prospective students.

External: Regular contact with prospective freshmen and transfer students, their parents, guidance counselors, and alumni volunteers; conduct interviews and group information sessions, attend events on and off campus.

Students: Regular contact with student office workers and student recruiters to assist with daily schedules and special projects.

Supervisory Responsibility None.

Qualifications

Experience: 2 to 4 years of professional work experience required, preferably in undergraduate admission.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Valid driver’s license required.

Required Skills

Understand standardized testing (AP, IB, SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, TOEFL). Knowledge of curriculum differences in the United States and globally, including AP, IB, Dual Credit, A Levels, IGCSE, etc.

Ability to understand subject matter progression within all high school subjects and evaluate preparation in varied high school environments.

Ability to understand impact of socioeconomic conditions on opportunity and achievement.

Ability to interpret student experiences and goals; advise on suitability for the university and the path toward achieving goals for prospective students, parents, and counselors.

Knowledge of extracurricular activities, honors/awards common to high school students, and their importance in the admission process.

Ability to protect sensitive and confidential information; identify exceptions to normal policies.

Deep knowledge of different kinds of high school environments.

Ability to interpret, analyze, and make decisions based on conflicting data.

Strong presentation skills.

Ability to develop, enhance, and nurture relationships with prospective freshmen and their families while providing consistent, accurate information to encourage matriculation. Must possess superior interpersonal skills and work closely with current students, staff, and external sources.

Must demonstrate a customer service orientation and ability to collaborate with students, parents, staff, and outside organizations. Must be able to interpret and explain university policies and the admission process to prospective students and parents.

Excellent written and oral communication skills; superior organizational, reporting, and analysis skills required. Ability to read, comprehend, and synthesize quickly.

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Mature, professional, and discreet.

Self‑motivated; demonstrate leadership and the ability to work in teams, multitask, and facilitate programs.

Meticulous attention to detail.

Diplomatic in a high‑pressure atmosphere; respect confidentiality.

Strong facility with end‑user technology such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Ability to learn new software programs quickly required.

Superior knowledge of the university.

Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.

Ability to maintain consistent attendance.

Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

Willingness to learn and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies.

Working Conditions Office setting with meetings and activities throughout campus. The position requires driving personal vehicle while on the job. Recruitment travel requires plane and rental car transportation. Frequent evening and weekend work is required. The position involves responsibility for working with individuals under 18 years of age.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period, and signing of the remote work checklist certification form.
