The Public Employees' Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS) serves the state of Mississippi by providing retirement benefits for individuals working in state government, public school, universities, community colleges, municipalities, counties, the Legislature, highway patrol, and other such public entities.
The Benefit Payments Division is responsible for processing and maintaining monthly benefit payrolls for all defined benefit plans administered by PERS. Duties include routine maintenance activities such as processing name or address changes, COLA options, federal tax withholding, insurance deductions, direct deposit routing, IRS Forms 1099‑R, reconciling payroll‑related disbursements, balancing and reconciling insurance billings, and updating retiree/beneficiary accounts.
This entry‑level professional position will assist PERS members, retirees, and beneficiaries who enter the PERS building with questions related to the Benefits Payments and Refunds Division. Job duties include:
Review and process change requests for address, direct deposit account, and tax withholding.
Generate documents and letters such as retiree benefit verification and copies of tax forms.
Receive and route the division’s incoming mail and faxes.
Respond to messages and transfer phone calls from Customer Service.
Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
What you'll need to be successful Ability to respond professionally and appropriately to questions, with awareness of members’ diverse levels of knowledge about PERS, finances, and retirement. The candidate will need to become familiar with PERS regulations and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications Typically requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university and 0–2 years of experience.
