Program Director (Center for Southeast Asia Studies) The Center for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS) was founded in 1960 to advance research and teaching on the countries of Southeast Asia, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam, and the region as a whole. The Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) sponsors a wide variety of academic and public programs, including seminars, conferences, cultural events, and outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities

Design, conduct, promote, and support research and public educational programs at CSEAS (60%) and the core institute (40%), such as conferences, workshops, faculty support programs, student fellowships, and grant administration.

Assess research and outreach needs, develop programs, materials, newsletters, and learning technologies accordingly.

Process and service operational and financial transactions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, data entry, customer service, and reporting.

Identify and cultivate new donor prospects, develop fundraising materials, and organize related programs and events.

Plan and develop new programs and curricula, adjust existing programs, and oversee faculty and graduate research support.

Collaborate with the Faculty Chair and Executive Committee on long‑range strategic planning for research and public education programs.

Develop constituencies and promote programs to target audiences, serving as institutional liaison to peer research institutions locally, nationally, and abroad.

Recruit, select, orient, and evaluate prospective program partners.

Manage the Visiting Scholar Program, including application and approval processes, arrival procedures, visa compliance, and problem‑solving activities.

Identify and develop evaluation tools for programs and adjust programs based on participant evaluations.

Assist in implementing specific fundraising activities, grant writing, and proposal development.

Research potential donors through background surveys and prospect identification.

Facilitate and support special program events.

Schedule programs and identify program topics.

Work with the IEAS Business Manager to develop and reconcile program budgets.

Ensure accurate financial processing, including accounts payable and receivable, and maintain smooth daily operations.

Lead junior staff and student assistants; advise staff at sub‑centers.

Provide training or mentoring to graduate students and visiting scholars.

Required Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the functional area and the impact of work on related areas.

Strong analytical skills with problem‑solving and organizational ability.

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

Familiarity with institutional policies and procedures.

Experience in program delivery and evaluation.

Awareness of current research on Southeast Asian countries and Southeast Asian studies.

Skill in conducting needs assessments and developing new programs to meet organizational needs.

Proficiency in business software (Word, Excel, Access, Open Berkeley Website, PowerPoint).

Proficiency in at least one Southeast Asian language.

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Continuing education in a related field.

Salary & Benefits Salary range: $63,000 – $85,700. The position is full‑time (40 hours/week), exempt, and paid monthly.

Eligible for UC benefits.

Initial allocation 60 % CSEAS and 40 % core institute.
