Director of Environmental Planning
Location: San Diego, CA (Hybrid)
Compensation: $155,000 – $200,000 + Bonus + Benefits
Overview A well‑established engineering, planning, and design firm is seeking a
Director of Environmental Planning
to lead and expand its Environmental Services Division. This role is responsible for both
project delivery and business development , with a strong emphasis on growing a new service area within Southern California.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong leadership capabilities, deep environmental planning expertise, and experience managing complex regulatory compliance projects.
Key Responsibilities Environmental Planning & Project Management
Lead preparation and processing of
CEQA and NEPA compliance documents
and technical studies
Manage
project schedules, budgets, and client expectations
Oversee document preparation and ensure high‑quality deliverables
Coordinate with internal staff, subconsultants, and technical specialists
Regulatory & Agency Coordination
Interface with agencies including:
County and City jurisdictions
California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW)
Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB)
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and requirements
Business Development & Growth
Drive growth of a new service area through:
Proposal preparation
Client development
Strategic marketing efforts
Build relationships with
Southern California agencies and private clients
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and mentor a team of
2–5 staff members
Foster collaboration across internal teams and external partners
Ensure strong
QA/QC standards
across all deliverables
Qualifications Required
10–15+ years of experience
in environmental planning or related field
Professional Engineer (PE) license required
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
Strong background in
land development projects
Experience working for a
private engineering or consulting firm
Must currently work in the
state of California
Technical Expertise
Extensive experience with:
CEQA / NEPA processes
Environmental documentation and compliance
Budgeting, scheduling, and project delivery
Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and agency coordination
Core Competencies

Business development and client relationship management
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
