Senior Technical Director Electrical Engineering (Renewables) Location: Denver, CO metropolitan area; remote locations may be considered.

WSP, a leading engineering and professional services firm, seeks an experienced electrical engineer to lead high‑voltage (HV) projects in the renewables sector, including utility and commercial‑scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across the United States.

Responsibilities

Recruit and develop an HV‑focused design team in the Denver area.

Lead project oversight and review of HV collector station designs and related studies.

Coordinate and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for mid‑level and complex projects, ensuring compliance with codes and regulations.

Apply advanced electrical engineering techniques across project phases—concept, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.

Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety, phasing plans, and updated layouts.

Oversee design and construction of electrical infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including rehabilitation, reconstruction, site development, grading, drainage, equipment layout, and safety plans.

Manage budgets, monitor external events, track hours and expenses, and supervise subcontractors and staff.

Review permit applications, design plans, standby plans, contracts, and conduct periodic construction inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.

Engage with public and private entities regarding electrical/engineering challenges.

Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining findings and recommendations.

Mentor staff for professional development.

Stay current with the latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on federally, state, regional, and locally funded projects, and participate in proposal and business‑development activities.

Make responsible, ethical decisions regarding company funds and resources, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

15+ years of post‑education experience providing design deliverables for renewables, ideally at utility, industrial, or commercial scale.

Professional Electrical Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred).

Expertise in electrical engineering principles, HV collector station design, and project permitting.

Experience in infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management, including coordination with civil, P&C, SCADA, and telecom disciplines.

Proficiency in mentoring staff and leading teams with strict QA/QC adherence.

Strong knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, and record‑keeping requirements.

Excellent technical calculation skills, interpretation of plans and specifications, and compliance review.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences.

Self‑leadership and ability to interact with clients, regulators, and staff at all levels.

Experience in coordinating subcontractors and maintaining workplace safety.

Ability to adapt to changing schedules and prioritize tasks in a high‑pressure environment.

Occasional travel may be required.

Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Balance of Plant solar and/or BESS projects.

Compensation Expected Salary: $162,400 – $265,300.
