
Director of Military Relations

Career Area Public Relations/Communications/Marketing
The responsibilities of the Director of Military Relations include developing and executing a comprehensive engagement strategy with each of the military installations in the State of North Carolina. The position will coordinate with federal affairs, state affairs, and research to ensure collaboration and cooperation on issues affecting higher education and our military and federal funding opportunities with our military partners. It will also work closely with the NC Secretary of Military Affairs to maximize UNC‑CH’s assets as the premier partner to North Carolina’s military, and will coordinate with the UNC System Office on military and veterans’ issues. The role reports to the Chief Strategic Officer and works in collaboration with other members of the UNC Public Affairs division.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Relevant post‑baccalaureate degree required (or foreign equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience in marketing, communications, journalism, public affairs, or a related field; for candidates with comparable professional backgrounds, a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience may be accepted.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Former military personnel with knowledge of North Carolina military installations. Experience with strategy development and work within a fast‑paced environment. Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of the mission, purpose, and organization of higher education institutions.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Experience and proficiency in Department of Defense research priorities and funding opportunities, working knowledge of North Carolina political landscapes in relation to military installations, and strong written and oral communication skills.
