
Underwriting Manager - Residential Products

Purpose: Lead a team of Personal Lines Residential, Recreational, and/or Commercial Physical Damage Underwriters to (1) deliver underwriting quality that compliantly achieves American Modern’s profitable growth goals, (2) deliver a positive underwriting experience via production and service level targets that meet our sales partners’ and policyholders’ expectations, (3) serve as a profitable growth co‑pilot by fostering meaningful collaboration with sales partners and internal stakeholders, and (4) develop our people to achieve their career ambitions.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Develop associates to ensure a combination of logic, expertise, analysis, experience, wisdom, and underwriting methods are consistently used to make sound, compliant, and timely underwriting decisions.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders—such as members of the Underwriting Leadership team, Sales, Product, Corporate Underwriting, and Customer Service—fostering consistent communications, effective processes, and teamwork.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with external Sales Partners to provide meaningful insights on their book of business and the achievement of our profit targets via portfolio‑based underwriting and individual risk underwriting techniques.
Maintain and foster deep product and underwriting expertise within the Underwriting Department to deliver on our responsibilities and financial targets.
Lead a diverse team to deliver expected key performance indicators, service level targets, and a positive customer experience, measured by non‑cat loss ratio, quality control scores, new business turnaround times, and Net Promoter Scores.
Foster a positive culture and team environment that includes development, accountability, excellence, and team building through continuous conversations resulting in increased employee engagement and results.
Utilize data and analytics to manage production, performance, and drive efficiencies.
Identify and drive process improvements and workflow efficiency initiatives.
Ensure a culture of compliance through systems, audit, and training.
Support adherence to risk management policies and procedures.
Responsible for high‑level administrative functions within the department, which include performance management of staff, anticipation of staffing needs, design, and implementation of training programs for strategic growth.
Additional Manager responsibilities:
Analyze market and financial data to make informed decisions, and ensure all underwriting decisions mitigate risk and comply with company standards.
Share feedback when areas of concern are discovered with Product, Sales, and sales partners.
Serve as the face of Underwriting to internal stakeholders and key Sales Partners, fostering a partnership to deliver a positive and profitable relationship.
Develop and lead successful teams and culture, while attracting and retaining top talent.

Advanced experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Appian, Microsoft Power Automate, Power BI, and Outlook.

Skills / Knowledge / Experience: Required: 5+ years of underwriting experience. Required: 2+ years supervising exempt associates, teams or processes, preferably in underwriting—tactical and strategic in nature.
Bachelor’s Degree.
Preferred:
Advanced degree.
Supervisor’s certification, CPCU or other industry coursework/designation.
