Director of Consumer Financial Protection Policy

Better Markets, Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Better Markets is a highly influential, high-profile non-profit advocacy organization with an exciting and consequential mission: it fights for economic and social justice by advocating for a strong, resilient financial system that supports the productive economy and creates broad-based wealth. It has a team of highly experienced, substantive experts, including in securities, derivatives, banking, and commodities, and is seeking a Director of Consumer Financial Protection Policy to lead our work across the policymaking and rulemaking processes. This position reports directly to the Policy Director and COO. Prosperity can only be achieved when Americans have access to financial services that help them increase their wealth and save for major milestones like buying a home, paying for college and funding retirement. When Wall Street, Big Tech, and other financial actors offer products and services focused on wealth extraction, junk fees, and tricks and traps, Main Street is robbed of the opportunity to keep and grow their hard-earned money. Conversely, when consumer financial services are properly designed, marketed, and priced, households and small businesses have an opportunity to thrive and expand access to income, wealth, and overall economic growth. Better Markets advocates for policies that enable all Americans to achieve their financial goals and dreams while protecting consumers from harms like predatory lending, abusive debt collection, infringements on data privacy, mandatory arbitration clauses, and discrimination in lending markets. We focus on proactive solutions to maximize real, durable wealth creation, insist that financial institutions engaging in misconduct are held accountable, and act as a counterweight to powerful industry lobbying groups. With the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) under attack—in terms of the institutions it examines, rules it enforces, and its very funding and existence—this is an urgent and critical time to lead the fight in promoting and protecting the interests of America’s financial consumers. It is also an opportunity to rethink and build the next generation of policies that support Main Street Americans seeking economic security, opportunity, and prosperity. RESPONSIBILITIES

Closely monitor consumer financial protection activities, including those at the CFPB, DOJ, state attorneys general, etc., as well as developments in the consumer financial services industry (e.g., banks, fintechs, credit reporting agencies, Buy Now Pay Later firms, etc.). Develop a strategic direction for the consumer financial services portfolio as well as plans to execute. This includes drafting both responsive documents, like comment letters, and engaging in self-initiated work, like reports and policy recommendations, highlighting topical issues and presenting solutions to challenges. Participate in panels and other public discussions, as well as briefings with Congressional, regulatory, and Administration staff. Engage with reporters and the media on areas of expertise as appropriate. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance, business administration, economics, or a related field. An advanced degree is preferable. Seven or more years of regulatory, Hill, administration, or equivalent experience is highly desirable, but not necessary if the candidate has substantial market, financial, or other directly related senior private sector experience. In-depth knowledge of relevant laws and regulations. Extremely strong written and verbal communication skills. Proactive, self-directed workstyle. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where juggling many activities is the norm. Strong team ethic. A good sense of humor! ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
