Recreation Leader II - Lifeguard

The City of Bell Gardens Recreation & Community Services Department's vision is to create community through people, parks, and programs. The City of Bell Gardens is seeking highly motivated and public service-oriented individuals for the position of Recreation Leader II - Lifeguard. This is a recurrent, part-time, as needed position. Hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Duties include: providing for the safety of persons using the City swimming pool and related areas; aiding persons in danger; enforcing pool safety rules and regulations; monitoring swimming and other pool activities; rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning; applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid; inspecting swimming pool for cleanliness and performing routine maintenance; keeping a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and preparing written reports of these activities; assisting in teaching swimming techniques and performing related work as required. Organizes and instructs swim classes; observes swimmers and pool area; enforces facility regulations, policies and procedures; detects and prevents unsafe situations by enforcing pool facility rules and performing regular maintenance; maintains order and discipline at the pool facility; promotes safety of pool patrons; conducts chemical tests of water and keeps routine records of test results and chemicals used; may assist cashier; and performs other work related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications include: one or more seasons of experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable. Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting is preferred. Some direct experience in leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activities is highly desirable. Must be at least 16 years of age or older at the time of application and in the eleventh grade or higher. All students under the age of 18, who have not completed his/her high school graduation requirement must submit a valid Work Permit. Licenses and certificates required include: Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced); Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR; and Red Cross Lifeguard Training at time of hire. Other knowledge, skills, and abilities include: knowledge of lifesaving techniques, principles and practices; policies, rules and regulations governing conduct and safety of persons using the pool; first-aid principles and practices; methods, materials and equipment involved in maintenance and operation of swimming pools. Ability to rescue drowning swimmers and administer artificial respiration and first aid; supervise conduct of pool patrons and maintain order in a tactful manner; use life lines, rings and other safety equipment; follow written and oral instructions; and maintain accurate records. Skill in reading and writing and maintaining and cleaning pools. Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; team oriented; skilled in First Aid and CPR.
