Job Summary
Performs technical stenographic duties in taking and transcribing verbatim notes of legal proceedings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Record verbatim testimony in courtroom proceedings using a stenotype machine and computer-aided transcription software. Accurately transcribe testimony of civil, criminal, orphans’ court and other miscellaneous proceedings and prepare a complete and accurate transcript as requested.
Must possess active RPR certification or equivalent and real-time writing capability.
Certify the accuracy of transcriptions.
Read from stenographic notes when called upon.
File and answer correspondence in a timely manner using Microsoft Word.
Produce accurate and timely reports to the Chief Court Reporter.
Maintain accurate financial records, files, and schedules for all court proceedings using Microsoft Excel.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduate of an accredited court-reporting school with certification/degree that includes verbatim dictation at 180 wpm (literary), 200 wpm (jury charge), and 225 wpm (Q&A). Preference given to candidates with RPR and CRR certifications. In-house testing is required for all candidates.
Excellent English grammar and punctuation skills and extensive knowledge of legal and medical terminology.
Minimum of two years of court-reporting experience, including real-time work.
Own computer-aided stenotype machine, laptop computer, and CAT software, and maintain all equipment in excellent working order.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and others encountered during the course of work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical demands include, but are not limited to, the following actions performed at least occasionally or several times per day:
Stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, crouching, kneeling, standing, walking, talking, reaching, hearing.
Light lifting (0–20 lbs) and some medium lifting (0–50 lbs).
Normal environmental conditions with occasional exposure to temperature changes, wet or humid conditions, noise and vibration, and chemicals.
