Position Summary This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Family and Sports Program Director at Charlestown YMCA will lead, develop and launch activities that bring youth, caregivers and families closer together, encourage good health and foster connections through various activities and shared interest. Under the supervision of the Branch Executive Director, the Youth and Family Director oversees the administration and operations of youth sports, adult sports, enrichment, teen programs, annual campaign and special events, ensuring a positive, safe, enriching environment and responding to community needs in accordance with YMCA core values and mission.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure programs and services meet community needs by supervising existing activities, establishing new ones, and expanding programs as needed in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.
Manage program rosters, enrollment and reporting, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Recruit and hire diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity; train and develop them to meet programming goals and quality measures.
Model relationship‑building skills in all interactions and maintain collaborative relationships internally and externally, including with community organizations.
Develop and monitor budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
Secure and schedule facilities and create and schedule classes, activities, or events; manage gym, birthday party and rental schedules.
Provide direct service instruction and facilitation (10‑15 or 20 hours per week) in programs, ensuring appropriate staffing and coverage.
Collaborate with other branch departments on programs, services and communication of upcoming activities.
Develop new programs, events, or services that meet community needs and align with strategic goals, fostering core relationships among participants.
Ensure a variety of program offerings, including physical activity, arts, dance, sports and games, for a wide age range (birth to 13 years).
Welcome current and new family members, providing support in aligning their needs with programs and services.
Participate in the Annual Campaign as a staff worker and sustaining member.
Oversee the administration and operation of programs serving children of all ages, youth, teens, and families at the branch and off‑site.
Oversee the Stay & Play program for members 6 weeks to 12 years, ensuring a nurturing, safe, fun, and interactive environment.
Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of all Youth/Teen facilities to safety and cleanliness standards.
Develop and execute meaningful and impactful teen programming in and outside the YMCA.
Teach/coach youth and family programs as needed or directed.
Support branch/department initiatives to membership retention and Annual Giving goals.
Build and maintain positive relationships with members, staff, and the community.
Interpret, communicate, and promote Y mission, goals, and objectives to employees, volunteers, members, and the community.
Partner with organizations aligned with the Y to meet the needs of community children, youth, and families.
Enhance off‑site Y youth programming to improve access and reach underserved populations.
Other duties as assigned.
Evening, holiday and weekend shifts are an expectation.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in human services, health sciences, or a related field.
YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
Minimum 3 years of experience working with youth and families.
At least 2 years of supervising and developing staff and volunteer teams.
Demonstrated understanding of developmental progression of skills in children and program development.
Four years of sports coaching experience.
Experience operating sports leagues in a leadership role preferred.
Experience creating, implementing, and evaluating Youth and Family programming and events.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Strong initiative, effective prioritization, and organizational skills.
Within 30 days of hire: completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Working with Program Volunteers, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic segments.
Physical Demands
Ability to physically and verbally interact with members and staff.
Sometimes able to lift up to 50 lbs.

CPR/AED and First Aid certifications

Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
