This is specialized and responsible work in the operation of a sophisticated communications and information retrieval system in the Police Department during an assigned shift. Job Description
This work involves answering multiple emergency and non-emergency telephone lines and communicating effectively with callers and with Police, Fire, or EMS personnel to provide the proper service accurately and promptly. Work is performed under the general supervision of a shift supervisor. Essential Job Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Ability to work all assigned shifts, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays, and to work mandatory overtime as needed. Answers all incoming 911 and non-emergency calls for the City of Delray Beach, Town of Gulf Stream, and Town of Highland Beach. Maintains conversation with callers, obtaining or verifying pertinent information, giving emergency pre-arrival instructions, and interacting with highly emotional people who may be facing a crisis. Provides callers with necessary assistance, including transferring calls to other departments and referring callers to proper agencies. Usage of a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for law enforcement response and documentation. Dispatches law enforcement personnel to calls for assistance by operating a sophisticated radio communications system. Receives and transmits messages by radio and maintains radio logs. Monitors NCIC/FCIC terminals; querying, entering, and removing persons/property from the database; transmitting messages over a nationwide system. Handles and disseminates sensitive and confidential materials through computer network terminals. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis. Minimum Qualifications
Must possess a high school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma. At least one (1) year of general office experience. Experience in the use of two-way communication systems preferred. Must be able to pass a polygraph examination. Must be able to obtain a FCIC/NCIC Certification. Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position, as well as working mandatory shift hours, including days, nights, holidays, and weekends, unscheduled overtime to cover shifts and for emergency-preparedness situations. The abilities expected of all employees include being able to respond to supervision, guidance and direction of superiors in a positive, receptive manner and in accordance with stated policies, be appropriately groomed and attired so as to present a professional image in accordance with the organization's mission, goals, and policies; report for work promptly and properly prepared at the time and place required by the assignment or orders; notify the appropriate supervisor of intended absences in accordance with stated rules; conform with standards and rules regarding use of accrued time; demonstrate a polite, helpful and courteous manner when engaged in any activity with the public; operate and care for equipment to manufacturer's specifications and/or within the specified parameters; demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and colleagues. A comparable combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
