
Distribution Designer

Job Overview
This position requires the successful candidate to work for a contractor in a temp-to-perm format with the possibility of converting to a direct Leidos employee in approximately 6 months from the initial hire date. The role is located in Minneapolis, MN, and involves providing distribution design engineering for overhead and underground feeders across the client's distribution footprint. The candidate will develop construction work packages for the electric distribution system using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, Work Management Systems (WMS), and other client systems. Distribution systems may be in an overhead, underground, or underground residential distribution (URD) environment. Project work may include joint use make‑ready and street light projects.
Responsibilities
Develop work packages for overhead, underground residential distribution, and underground cable/conduit.
Conduct field visits or field engineering to assess project requirements.
Identify and resolve conflicting utility issues.
Perform engineering calculations including structural analysis of poles, guying, cable pulling, electric demand, fault currents, and coordination of protective devices.
Prepare forestry trimming requests, facilitate permit and right‑of‑way acquisition, develop bills of materials (BOM), estimate costs, and advocate for customers through easement acquisition and contribution calculations.
Conduct post‑construction reviews.
Required Education & Experience 2-year technical degree or high school diploma with less than 2 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with STORMS, Katapult, ESRI, AutoCAD, PDS, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Familiarity with pole loading software such as DDS, O‑Calc, SPIDA Calc, Pole Foreman, and LD Field.
Proven ability to communicate effectively with clients and project teams.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with 3rd‑party make‑ready design for electric utility distribution or development of civil and electrical packages for 3rd‑party carriers.
Ability to read and interpret client‑supplied documents and standards.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
Strong mathematical foundation.
Key Skills & Experience
National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) compliance.
Structural pole modeling.
Electrical power calculations.
Design using DDS.
Project management.
Pay Range $35,100.00 – $63,450.00.
