
Communications Specialist

The Port of Virginia – Virginia International Terminals is seeking a Communications Specialist to support the development and implementation of The Port of Virginia Communications Strategy. This role reports to the Manager, Strategic Communications and works collaboratively across all communication channels to ensure The Port of Virginia (POV) brand is aligned throughout all design, content, communications, and social media.
Role:
The Communications Specialist will support the day‑to‑day implementation of communication strategies and plans, with a primary focus on creating and managing digital internal and external communications, including social media, event support, branded materials, and strategic presentations, ensuring brand standards are adhered to and messaging is consistent across responsible platforms.
Responsibilities of the Communications Specialist:
Executes communication plans that support organizational initiatives
Creates and maintains high impact content for internal and external audiences, including presentation templates, PowerPoint decks, signage, and recurring executive visuals.
Contributes to the social media strategy including content planning and development, scheduling, posting, and analyzing engagement metrics to enhance reach, consistency, and brand voice.
Captures and edits photo and video content and manages library.
Supports strategic informational sessions through event coordination, preparing materials, editing decks, coordinating visuals, and providing A/V and logistics support.
Manages external vendors (e.g., printers, designers, photographers) to ensure accurate specifications and on‑time delivery of communications materials.
Conducts audits and updates corporate website and intranet
Delivers presentations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field;
At least 1 year of corporate communications experience with hands‑on experience in a marketing, communications, or visual design;
Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud or similar platforms, with experience in photo and video editing;
Strong attention to details with impeccable writing, editing, proofreading and design skills;
Excellent project, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple assignments under deadline;
Working knowledge of MS Applications, including SharePoint;
Working knowledgeable of creative design and multimedia tools, website content management systems, and digital communication platforms, including social media.
The Port of Virginia is a 24-hour, 7‑day-a‑week, 365‑day-a‑year operation, schedule and location may vary based on the needs of the operation. Selected applicant must be able to pass a pre‑employment background check which may include any of the following: Academic record and verification of education and/or certifications; Employment history (including references); Criminal history; Driving record; Fingerprinting; drug and alcohol testing, Fit for duty Physical, Other records or information related to the candidate’s suitability for the position.
Selected applicant must be able to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card).
