Associate Creative Director
Razorfish, Birmingham, MI, United States
Overview
We’re looking for an Associate Design Director to lead UI design across complex, component-driven digital ecosystems. This is a hands‑on leadership role for a designer with deep expertise in Figma, strong experience working within established design systems, and a sharp eye for craft, consistency, and performance.
You will operate as a player‑coach, contributing directly to the work while leading UI design across defined workstreams. You’ll partner closely with Design and Experience leads as well as cross‑functional teams to translate strategy and data into scalable, high‑performing design solutions. This is a hybrid role, requiring three days in‑office each week.
Responsibilities
Lead UI design for assigned workstreams, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment to broader creative and experience direction.
Deliver high‑quality, production‑ready design in Figma, including layouts, components, and prototypes.
Translate strategy, user needs, and business goals into intuitive, scalable UI solutions.
Set and uphold standards for craft, accessibility, and usability across all outputs.
Work within an established design system, making informed decisions on when to extend existing components versus introduce new patterns.
Create, extend, and refine UI components, patterns, and documentation to support evolving product and marketing needs.
Define and document component behavior, usage guidelines, and edge cases to ensure consistency across experiences.
Contribute to system governance by reinforcing standards, scalability, and reuse across workstreams.
Partner closely with Engineering and Content Strategy to ensure components are implemented accurately and function effectively.
Apply insights from analytics, testing, and user behavior to inform design decisions and iteration.
Design with performance in mind, balancing brand expression with usability, clarity, and conversion goals.
Collaborate with Strategy and Analytics teams to align design outputs to benchmarks and optimization efforts.
Support personalization strategies through modular, flexible UI systems that enable dynamic content.
Design with an understanding of the broader customer journey across owned channels.
Ensure UI systems and patterns support downstream experiences such as CRM, email, and account‑based interactions.
Support lifecycle and CRM teams by ensuring UI enables consistent and flexible cross‑channel experiences.
Collaborate closely with Creative leads, Experience Design, Content, Strategy, Product, and Engineering teams.
Partner with Experience Design to translate journeys, IA, and interaction models into scalable UI systems and patterns.
Present work clearly and confidently, articulating rationale and design decisions to internal teams and clients.
Provide guidance and feedback to designers, helping elevate craft and consistency across the team.
Contribute to a collaborative, high‑performing team environment.
Qualifications
8–10 years of experience in visual design, UI design, or digital product design within an agency or similar environment.
Strong portfolio demonstrating high‑quality UI craft and scalable design across complex digital ecosystems.
Deep expertise in Figma, including components, variants, auto‑layout, prototyping, and system management.
Proven experience working within and evolving established design systems, with a strong point of view on component reuse, extension, and governance.
Strong understanding of responsive design, accessibility (WCAG), and modern UI guidelines.
Experience designing within component‑based, modular systems across large‑scale platforms.
Ability to apply data, insights, and performance considerations to design decisions.
Experience designing across connected digital ecosystems, with awareness of lifecycle and CRM touchpoints.
Proven ability to lead design across workstreams, balancing hands‑on execution with direction and oversight.
Strong communication and presentation skills with internal teams and client collaborators.
Experience collaborating within large, cross‑functional organizations and multi‑layered team structures.
Experience working in agile or hybrid delivery environments.
Familiarity with personalization strategies and lifecycle design is a plus.
Automotive experience is a plus.
You’ll Thrive Here If You
Care deeply about craft and consistency, especially within large, complex systems.
Know when to reuse, extend, or challenge existing patterns—and can justify those decisions.
Are comfortable working within constraints and using them to drive better, more scalable design.
Enjoy collaborating across fields, especially with Engineering and Content partners.
Bring a point of view, but know how to operate effectively within a larger leadership structure.
Take pride in creating design that not only looks great, but performs and scales.
