
Sales Tax Consultant

Job Title: Sales Tax Consultant
Location: Jersey City, NJ (hybrid schedule – 3 days onsite)
Hours: Part-time, 24 hours/week between 9AM-5PM
Type: 3-6 month contract
Compensation: $50‑60 per hour
Responsibilities
Lead a short-term project focused on resolving outstanding sales tax issues across multiple U.S. states, utilizing strong Avalara expertise. Resolve outstanding sales tax liabilities, discrepancies, and unpaid balances through detailed calculations, reconciliations, and corrections of prior filings. Utilize Avalara (AvaTax & Returns) for compliance, reporting, and issue resolution. Communicate and negotiate with state/local tax authorities regarding payment plans and abatements. Partner with sales and cross-functional teams to gather necessary data and resolve tax matters efficiently. Ensure all filings and payments are current within the project timeline. Maintain comprehensive documentation and suggest process improvements. Provide weekly status updates to the CEO and Financial Controller. Complete registration processes in states where registration has not yet been established. Coordinate with the Washington, DC Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR), including the Voluntary Disclosure Unit, regarding registration setup and compliance issues. Requirements
Bachelor's degree 3+ years of relevant experience Proven experience in multi-state sales tax compliance, audits, and issue resolution. Strong hands‑on experience with Avalara Sales Tax Platform (required). Demonstrated success resolving unpaid and complex sales tax liabilities. Excellent analytical skills and proficiency with numbers, calculations, and reconciliations. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (data analysis and reporting). Strong communication, negotiation, and follow‑up skills. Experience working cross‑functionally, including with sales teams. Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
