Sr. Underwriter - E&S Property

Position Purpose Under general oversight, performs responsibilities similar to Underwriter I and II but with greater ownership and decision‑making authority. Builds stronger relationships with producers, reinsurers, and contacts; reviews complex sources of profit by selecting appropriate risks; and drives increase in submission flows.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new or renewal submissions with high premium or risk exposure.

Build strong relationships between agents, reinsurers, and contacts.

Review complex submissions, account losses, pricing models, and profitable premiums.

Assist with special projects or other duties as needed.

Education & Experience

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business, or a related field.

Minimum of 5+ years of related experience for consideration.

Or equivalent level of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

Use analytical methods in underwriting processes to find workable solutions.

Communicate findings and recommendations verbally and in writing to internal and external contacts.

Summarize and analyze large amounts of data using software.

Understand, apply, and properly document the nature of operations of the risk for assigned accounts.

Prepare, review, and complete underwriting analysis of accounts.

Demonstrate analytical skills and understanding of submission requirements, model entry, and product appetite.

Participate in underwriting related continuing education.

Generate innovative solutions within the underwriting department.

Obtain letter of authority and good understanding of markets and clients.

Process approval, issuance, or change requests for policies with some authority.

Work on slightly more complex risks than UW I with higher level of authority.

Present solutions to management on non‑standard issues without prior oversight.

Know proper sign‑off and correct underwriting judgment in most cases.

Undergo internal product process understanding, loss rating/credibility, and maintain a profitable book of business.

Compensation Overview Base salary range: $111,357.00 – $156,093.00. Salary considered jointly with geographic location, experience, scope & responsibilities, qualifications/credentials, talent availability & specialization, and business needs.
