The Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South (DSAM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the inclusion and empowerment of individuals with Down syndrome. Through education, resources, and support, the association serves to inform families and communities with the most current information to foster understanding and advocacy. Its mission extends to enhancing public awareness and encouraging positive attitudes about the value and contributions of people with Down syndrome. Role Description The DSAM is seeking a passionate and people-focused Executive Director to serve as the key leader in growing a vibrant, mission-driven community across the Mid-South. This role blends leadership, relationship-building, and purpose, overseeing day-to-day operations, guiding strategic direction, and advancing programs that support individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The Executive Director will serve as the face of the organization, building meaningful partnerships, leading development and marketing efforts to increase awareness and funding, and fostering a positive, engaged culture. Responsibilities include organizational and financial management, fundraising and donor development, program oversight, event coordination, and community advocacy, all while working closely with the Board to fulfill the mission. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership and organizational skills, experience in fundraising, marketing, and financial stewardship, and the ability to communicate and connect with diverse audiences. A heart for inclusion and empowerment is essential, along with a background in nonprofit management, social services, or a related field; a bachelor’s degree is required, and proficiency in relevant systems is a plus. This Memphis-based role includes community involvement and occasional evening and weekend events, offering a meaningful opportunity to lead, inspire, and create lasting impact.
Qualifications
Leadership and management skills with proven capability in organizational oversight, team management, and strategic planning
Fundraising experience, including donor development, grant writing, and community engagement
Proficiency in budget management, financial planning, and maintaining fiscal responsibility
Event planning and program development skills, including creating and managing impactful initiatives that align with the organization's goals
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to represent the organization effectively with various stakeholders and communities
Commitment to the inclusion and empowerment of individuals with Down syndrome
A background in nonprofit management, social services, marketing/development or related fields preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Marketing/Development or a related field required; advanced degree preferred
Proficiency in relevant software tools and systems is a plus
