Position Overview The Sales Engineer is responsible for driving project‑based sales by securing pump and related equipment specifications, managing bid opportunities, and developing relationships with engineers, contractors, and municipal stakeholders throughout the greater Phoenix market. This role focuses heavily on front‑end project influence, specification positioning, and conversion of bids into orders, working closely with PumpMan’s teams.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain strong relationships with engineering firms, municipalities, owners, and specifying authorities to influence specifications toward PumpMan‑represented manufacturers.
Identify, track, and manage bid and specification opportunities across municipal, commercial, and industrial markets.
Review project drawings, technical specifications, and bid documents to ensure PumpMan equipment is properly specified or positioned as an approved equal.
Coordinate with Applications Engineers and Estimators to develop accurate, competitive technical solutions and pricing.
Act as the primary sales contact from specification through bid award, ensuring continuity and customer confidence.
Support Outside Sales Representatives by assisting with project pursuits, bid strategy, and pre‑bid meetings
Track all projects, activities, and opportunities within the company CRM system to maintain accurate forecasting and reporting.
Conduct job walks, pre‑bid meetings, and customer visits as required.
Stay current on market conditions, competitive landscape, and product offerings.
Perform all duties with a safety‑first mindset, in alignment with company policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
3–7 years of experience in bid‑based sales, specification sales, or project sales within the water, wastewater, municipal, commercial, or industrial markets.
Strong understanding of pump systems, fluid handling equipment, and related applications.
Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, and bid documents.
Proven relationship‑building skills with engineers, contractors, and owners.
Strong organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Proficiency with CRM systems and Microsoft Office tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Existing relationships or book of business within the Phoenix water market.
Prior experience working for a pump manufacturer, representative firm, or service provider in a bid/spec environment.
Experience supporting municipal or large commercial bid projects.
Physical & Travel Requirements
Ability to travel locally to customer sites, engineering firms, and job locations as needed.
Occasional regional travel for meetings, training, or project support.
