Public Affairs Specialist
The primary purpose of this position is as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) to serve as a public affairs specialist in an Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) wing/group. The responsibilities of the position include acting as the primary assistant to the PA officer in executing the commander's public affairs program to include internal information, media relations, community relations, employer and family support. DUTIES: Prepares internal information print products such as newspaper/magazine for publication. Directs and instructs personnel assigned as reporters, writers, editors, photographers and illustrators; assigns news and feature articles, edits and revises copy for style, format and content; reviews and edits photography and artwork for quality and composition; performs or supervises page layout and design; briefs PAO on changes, "must-runs" and other critical items. Researches and writes stories/articles and rewrites material intended for publication as needed. Performs work for the production/maintenance of electronic and web-based information products. Implements and ensures the quality of the Hometown News Release program. Publicizes the program, monitors, logs and disseminates releases. Writes draft and final versions of news releases, feature articles, speeches, fact sheets, and brochures for internal and external audiences. Updates unit mission briefings and develops additional informational briefings as needed. Prepares requests for photographer or graphic support, takes photographs; selects and edits photographs and electronic images to accompany articles and media releases. Assists PAO with wing's community and congressional relations programs. Organizes, coordinates, publicizes and conduct periodic events with local organizations such as community councils, local governments, Chamber of Commerce, state and national legislative offices. Assists PAO and project officers with organizing and conducting larger events such as Open House, Armed Forces Day and Civic Leader Tours designed to promote positive relations between the base and surrounding communities. Assists the PAO in developing and maintaining the employer support program. Publicizes ESGR recognition program and assists wing members in nominating their employers for awards. Assists in planning and conducting employer day activities and employer flights. Attends state ESGR meetings as required when the PAO is not available. Assists wing members with information on employer/employee rights under USERRRA. Promotes the "citizen airman" theme of AFRC. Responds to media queries concerning special events, mobilizations, exercises, aircraft incidents or accidents. Clears responses with PAO or other appropriate authority before release. Confers with subject matter experts to obtain latest and most accurate information for use in news release, radio or TV spots, articles and features or response to query.
