Summary About the Assignment The Chatwal, New York an Unbound Collection renowned for its Art Deco elegance, intimate scale, and highly personalized service is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to supports both Engineering and oversee the Security Department ensuring operational continuity and exceptional guest experiences.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development

Lead, mentor, and develop the engineering and maintenance team, fostering a culture of accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.

Coach and counsel employees to uphold Hyatt service standards and procedures.

Maintain strong communication with corporate engineering and property leadership.

Building Operations & Maintenance

Oversee all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical equipment, carpentry, painting, and life‑safety systems.

Ensure all guest rooms, suites, and public areas meet luxury‑brand maintenance standards.

Conduct regular property inspections and ensure timely resolution of deficiencies.

Manage utility systems and oversee equipment specification and purchasing.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety

Maintain full compliance with NYC regulations, including FDNY, DOB, OSHA, and environmental standards.

Lead emergency preparedness, crisis management, and safety training initiatives.

Manage outsourced security operations and ensure compliance with Fire & Life Safety Director (FLSD) requirements.

Develop and manage annual engineering budgets, CAPEX planning, and long‑term asset protection strategies.

Administer department payroll with accuracy and adherence to union contracts.

Prepare and submit budget estimates, progress reports, and cost‑tracking documentation.

Project & Construction Oversight

Plan, organize, and direct activities related to facility maintenance, renovations, and construction projects.

Review contracts and negotiate revisions, changes, and additions with vendors, consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors.

Requisition supplies and materials for construction and maintenance projects.

Inspect and review projects to ensure compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and zoning requirements.

Collaborate with building officials, zoning authorities, and community design committees as needed.

Support property openings by coordinating with owners, contractors, and design professionals to resolve construction issues.

Partner with Housekeeping, Front Office, F&B, and other departments to support seamless guest experiences.

Maintain strong vendor relationships and oversee service contracts for engineering and security services.

Salary range:

$106,800 –$165,600

for experienced candidates

Qualifications

5–10+ years of engineering or facilities management experience, ideally in luxury hospitality or high‑end residential environments.

Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams in a unionized hotel environment.

FLSD certification required (or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe).

Strong technical knowledge of building systems and preventive maintenance programs.

Experience overseeing CAPEX , budgeting, and payroll administration.

Familiarity with NYC building codes, FDNY regulations, and compliance requirements.

Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including emergencies and off‑hours needs.

Strong understanding of Forbes service standards and luxury guest expectations.

Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.

Experience with property management systems and standard office software.

Flexibility to work long hours as required by operational demands, including weekends and holidays.

A true desire to satisfy the needs of others in a fast paced environment.

Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Service oriented style with professional presentations skills.

Hotel/Hospitality degree an asset.

Union Experience preferred.

Must possess the following strengths: high energy, entrepreneurial spirit, motivational leader, effective communicator, effective in providing exceptional customer service and ability to improve the bottom line.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Excel.

Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal and administrative skills.
