
Justice Court Clerk

Purpose of the Job
The purpose of this position is to facilitate the process of new case filings in the court, assisting with customer service over the phone or in person, processing mail, motions, and completing other procedures as required for case management. The position handles customer assistance for civil matters, orders of protection, injunctions of harassment and forcible detainers, and assists the criminal clerk with sentencing for criminal cases requiring fine and surcharge details. This role processes incoming cases and orders, maintains files, and provides backup assistance as a criminal clerk.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides customer service and policy/procedural answers to questions relating to civil issues and traffic cases on the phone or in person.
Maintains the filing system, processes department mail including motions and other filings related to case processing and management, issues correspondence, reviews files, and determines the best procedure as needed.
Processes incoming civil cases, small claims cases, orders of protection, injunctions against harassment and forcible detainers, and traffic cases with some criminal entry.
Provides backup as a criminal clerk, processing criminal and traffic payments and helping train new clerks.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Time spent: 60% customer service, 20% filing, 10% case processing, 10% backup, 10% other duties.
Supervisory responsibilities: does not supervise.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED.
One year court clerk experience and knowledge of case processing systems or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License if position duties require.

Physical Demands
Occasionally stands to attend to cash register.
Regularly lifts under 10 lbs. of work‑related materials or equipment.
Constantly requires dexterity for keyboard operation.
May need to walk to and from work sites, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, and twist.
Work Environment Office environment, lobby, reception area.
Safety Risks Generally not exposed to safety risk; occasionally may become exposed to telephone and in‑person verbal abuse and/or emotional individuals; occasionally may encounter individuals with weapons or out of control individuals.
Consequences of Errors Potential errors can result in minor delay or inconvenience; errors can be detected early.
