Editorial Fellow

Mother Jones, Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Position Description The Ben Bagdikian Fellowship Program offers an industry‑leading crash course in investigative journalism. Fellows fact‑check our most ambitious and impactful reporting, learning what it takes to publish hard‑hitting stories that inspire change. As fact‑checkers, fellows work closely with reporters and editors across the newsroom and platforms to ensure the accuracy and fairness of our reporting.

Fellowships are full‑time positions.

Fellows’ primary responsibility is fact‑checking our bi‑monthly print magazine, web stories, videos, and weekly radio show. They reverse‑engineer investigations and reported pieces, learning how to report, organize, and write sophisticated magazine or radio stories.

Additional duties may include original writing and reporting, involvement in digital projects such as newsletters, multimedia production, and our Climate Desk partnership, depending on time, interest, and organizational needs.

Fellows receive training in research tools, methods, media law, and regular skill‑building sessions covering the operations of a media organization.

Fellows should be prepared to work from our Washington, DC, or San Francisco offices at least once a week.
