Central Records Specialist
The City of Lansing is seeking a Central Records Specialist to join the Lansing Police Department (Central Records Division). The ideal candidate will possess skill in maintaining records/files, utilizing various programs, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, and properly retaining and dispensing confidential information. Essential Position Functions
Answer multi‑line phone calls and provide information to in‑person visitors regarding general police matters.
Process firearm‑licensing applications, conduct background checks, administer written tests, issue licenses, and collect fees.
Conduct arrest record checks for individuals, firearm applicants, government or criminal‑justice agencies, employers, and volunteer organizations, and collect associated fees.
Assist in onboarding and training new police cadets, develop training materials, organize training files, and conduct training exercises.
Gather information requested under the Freedom of Information Act.
Compile information requested by the Court or City Attorney for return of arrest‑record reports.
Prepare written reports from daily activity summaries, compiling data on the number of firearm applicants, persons fingerprinted for licensing or employment, and criminal fingerprints received.
Complete electronic and hand‑written transactions for payments received for traffic and police reports.
Operate the RMS (Records Management System) to enter and retrieve information.
Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in Technical, Administrative, Business, Criminal Justice, or related field.
One to three years of experience in a customer‑service‑related field.
Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
Must be able to be bonded under the City’s blanket bond; no dishonest acts prior to or after placement.
Must authorize the release of criminal‑history information from appropriate agencies.
Candidate will be subject to a complete background investigation.
Ability to become a Michigan Notary Public upon hire.
