Publishing Ethics Specialist
Job Summary
Support the resolution of publishing ethics issues such as plagiarism, manipulation of the peer review process, and/or gaming of industry-accepted bibliometrics. IEEE's ethical and conduct processes are complex, detail-oriented, and confidential in nature. The incumbent is primarily responsible for processing reported publishing misconduct through IEEE's centralized Ethics Point System, leading investigations as case manager, and serving as an IEEE subject matter expert on issues related to plagiarism and violations of the policies described in the PSPB Operations Manual.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as an IEEE Publications subject matter expert on publishing ethics issues.
Respond appropriately to all serious allegations of publishing misconduct, playing a pivotal role as case manager in the handling and resolution of ethics issues.
Provide initial review of incoming cases to determine if allegations merit further investigation.
Track and report regularly on the overall status of the misconduct caseload.
Explore and support methods of misconduct detection, working with technology and vendor systems to improve the sensitivity and specificity of analytic tools.
Maintain up‑to‑the‑minute familiarity with journal and conference peer review processes, publication ethics concepts, and intellectual property law.
Track reports on misconduct activities related to IEEE Publications, especially from conferences and periodicals.
Engage with external scholarly publishing partners, peers, and industry groups (such as COPE) to maintain active knowledge of current ethics issues and best practices for resolution.
Additional Responsibilities
Maintain confidential, individual case files.
Assist and advise Editors‑in‑Chief in adjudicating author appeals of paper rejections and other incidents outside the publishing ethics domain.
Stay up‑to‑date on best practices regarding publishing ethics and publishing standards within the STEM community.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (required)
Master's or other advanced degree in Physical science or engineering (preferred)
Work Experience
2‑4 years publishing experience (preferred)
2‑4 years experience with research and the scholarly publishing process in an STEM field (preferred)
Skills and Requirements
Strong technical, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
Strong communication skills and the ability to listen and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and strong, proven people, project, and time‑management skills.
Ability to apply knowledge and critical‑thinking skills to find solutions to day‑to‑day problems.
Ability to plan, execute, and improve work processes to ensure business objectives are achieved.
Ability to relate well with others, build relationships, and constructively interact with a variety of staff, volunteers, and vendors.
Proficiency in MS Office suite products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The Specialist will be expected to identify problems, respond quickly and consistently, and reach appropriate solutions.
