
SOCIAL MEDIA AIDE (HOURLY/NON-BENEFITED)

Overview The City of Santa Fe Springs seeks applicants for the position of Social Media Aide . This is an hourly
on-benefited position. Incumbents are expected to be available to work approximately 20-25 hours per week on a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Position purpose: Under general supervision, performs varied managerial support functions for the Department of Police & Community Services. The Social Media Aide supports the City’s communications and community engagement efforts by capturing photos and videos at City programs, activities, and events and developing engaging digital content for the City’s online platforms. This position assists with the creation, design, and publication of social media content—including posts, reels, stories, and graphics—while helping maintain an active, responsive, and informative presence across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, YouTube, and the City’s website. The Social Media Aide monitors and responds to comments and messages in a timely and professional manner and assists with the timely execution of marketing, advertising, public relations, and social media initiatives that promote City services, programs, and events. The position also supports the preparation of visual and written communication materials by writing, proofreading, and editing content for web-based and print applications. In addition, the position performs computer-aided graphic design and basic visual media production using tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (including InDesign and Illustrator) to create brochures, flyers, reports, and other promotional materials that support City communications and marketing efforts. Work is performed using City-provided equipment including mobile devices, cameras, and computers, and requires knowledge of photography techniques, visual storytelling, and current social media practices. Supervision Supervision Received: Media & Communications Specialists I and II Supervision Exercised: None Representative duties and qualifications Essential Job Specific Duties: Photographs City activities, programs, services, and events for City social media and other publications; formats text, photos and graphics for City publications, pamphlets, event programs, flyers, and social media posts, reels, and stories. Assists the Public Information Officer in the production of City publications; coordinates preparation of articles reporting on community or special events, City activities, Council actions, and topics of public interest. Administers the City’s social media accounts; develops content strategy for communicating the organization’s messages; provides support for brand and marketing campaigns; reviews and responds to public inquiries and comments on social media; monitors results and makes recommendations. Sets up informational booths and tables at City events or business expos. Uses a digital camera to capture video and photographs at City events; edits and formats photographs and video for electronic and print publication; maintains digital photo and video files. Maintains files related to civic affairs, community events, and information of interest to City residents and businesses; manages the City’s central photo/video file. Drafts announcements for community events or general information. Attends meetings and events, and records or presents for the City as needed. Confers with staff from various departments regarding design needs, graphics requirements and presentation techniques. Develops graphics for products, programming, logos, websites and other multimedia platforms for City departments and external clients. Prepares articles, advertisements, and other products to promote the City; reviews and edits all City publications and social media before dissemination. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, skills and abilities Knowledge Of: Media production; local government policies, programs, activities, services and events; principles of public administration, organization, policy evaluation, and community relations; research and writing methods; desktop publishing software; professional photography techniques; laws and regulations related to social media; copyright considerations; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; modern office procedures and equipment; word processing and graphic design software. Ability To: Analyze and interpret legislation, policies, and governmental regulations; follow directions; implement social media program procedures; develop social media posts, reels, stories, and similar content; coordinate marketing and social media campaign timelines; attend events after hours, weekends, and holidays; provide information to the public with sound judgment; use public relations techniques to respond to inquiries; work with accuracy; operate modern office and communications/photography equipment; organize and prioritize work; assist with City social media platforms; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Education and experience Minimum requirements: Graduation from high school or equivalent and completion of one year of college coursework is required. Completion of college coursework in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Graphic Design, Photography, Media Studies, or a related field is desirable. OR One year of experience creating social media content, photography, graphic design, or digital communications; experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Nextdoor) and Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is desirable. Preferred qualifications Experience taking photographs and short videos at events and community activities. Experience creating engaging social media content (posts, graphics, reels, stories). Knowledge of social media platforms and engagement best practices. Experience with Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop). Familiarity with DSLR cameras, mobile photography, lighting, and basic photo editing. A valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Working conditions and physical demands Working conditions: Indoor and outdoor work; noise level from quiet to loud; hazards are minimal. Physical demands: Sit, stand, walk, bend; push/pull/ reach; hear and speak; operate office equipment; see clearly; carry equipment; lift up to 25 pounds.
