VP Business Development
Achieve Partners, New York, NY, United States
Private Equity – VP Business Development
Achieve Partners is a private equity firm with $1B+ AUM focused on acquiring and building market-leading companies in sectors where the greatest value is created through people. Specifically, we acquire companies in sectors where talent shortages are most acute and where our unique strategy works best, typically in technology services and healthcare services, typically with $5-20M in EBITDA.
The Role
We’re seeking a VP Business Development to own Achieve’s investment sourcing engine. This is not a modeling role or a desk job. You’ll spend your time building relationships with founders, bankers, and lower middle market advisors to position Achieve in front of companies that would most benefit from our strategy – before a competitive process begins. There will be frequent travel to attend conferences in a wide range of sectors where our strategy is most relevant.
You’ll communicate our strategy convincingly. What we do is unique, creates significant social value, and has been widely reported and lauded, which facilitates and accelerates interest and conversations.
In addition to outreach and relationship-building, the successful candidate will have a passion and proven track record for using new AI tools to organize outreach to founders and intermediaries, helping them understand our value-add.
Finally, you’ll work closely with Achieve’s Investment Committee, deal teams, and portfolio company leadership to identify new opportunities and support growth across current and future funds.
What You’ll Do
•
Own the pipeline.
You’ll be responsible for building, managing, and converting a pipeline of proprietary deals across our sectors of interest. You’ll track everything in DealCloud, our CRM platform and leverage AI to drive consistent outbound activity.
•
Meet Founders.
Most Achieve companies were founder-owned. You’ll reach out to business owners directly through referrals, events, and targeted outreach to educate them about Achieve and our unique strategy, and invest in the relationship before anyone is ready to sell. The best relationships are born from shared concerns about lack of available talent to meet client demand, lack of clear pathways to enter the sector, and often a determination to change things for the better for young Americans.
•
Build the intermediary network.
Middle and lower-middle market investment bankers, business brokers, and advisors. You’ll identify, contact, and cultivate hundreds of these relationships systematically and persistently over time.
•
Attend conferences.
Industry conferences are key to the position. You’ll attend conferences regularly to learn about new sectors and network. This is where many relationships start. Expect to travel 50% of the time or more.
•
Tell the Achieve story.
You’ll represent Achieve in the market clearly and credibly. You’ll succinctly explain who we are, why our strategy can help their business and the country, and why a founder take interest.
Who You Are
You are genuinely drawn to people. You find founders fascinating and want to know how they built what they built, what keeps them up at night, and what they’re proud of. Authentic curiosity is what elevates the best relationship developers.
You’re great at building trust with people. Relationships you’ve built in prior roles have led to real outcomes. You have the confidence to tell the Achieve story without needing a script, and the humility to listen more than you talk.
You’re also highly organized and have a demonstrated track record of accomplishment. You thrive with a high level of autonomy and the latitude to build the sourcing function the way you think it should be built, plus the full backing of a $1B+ AUM private equity firm to make it a reality. And you have at least 3-7 years of professional experience in a relationship-intensive, outward facing role.
Relevant Backgrounds
You’ve probably worked in one of the following roles: •
Business development.
Likely for an operating company, probably for a business in an industry we target e.g., education, tech services, healthcare. •
Banking.
You’ve built relationships with business owners at an investment or commercial bank and understand how companies are financed. •
Search Fund.
You’ve spent time trying to find and acquire a business yourself. •
Wealth management.
You know what it means to earn trust from high-net-worth individuals.
Degree in economics, finance, accounting, or MBA not required. However, career switchers with MBAs welcome to apply.
