Job Description Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Special Education is responsible for assisting the Director of Special Education with providing appropriate special education services for all eligible students in accordance with Federal and State laws and School Board policies. In accordance with these responsibilities, the Assistant Director of Special Education directs the activities performed by select personnel assigned and provides leadership in the implementation of specialized instructional programming.

Roles and Responsibilities The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

Provides leadership to address the increased need across the division for implementation of highly specialized instructional programming for students with unique instructional and behavioral needs.

Evaluates and provides leadership for special education Supervisors within the Office of Special Education.

Guides programming and services for students requiring significant support for the development of specialized instructional services for reading, math, writing, behavior support services (FBA/BIP, coaching and consultation for teachers, MANDT, Ukeru), social skills, executive functioning, personal/social, and transition/post‑secondary instruction.

Serves as the primary contact for specialized instruction, and implementation of innovative programming to increase the capacity at the building and division level.

Assists with special education staffing for schools, including collaboration with school and division leaders to ensure appropriate staffing levels and support for student needs.

Works collaboratively with the Office of Procedural Support to ensure compliance with special education regulations, including mediation, state complaints, and due process hearing requests.

Collaborates with the Department of School Leadership to align special education services with school‑based instructional priorities and leadership initiatives.

Collaborates in identifying needs for professional learning for school‑based staff and stakeholders related to specialized instruction.

Develops and maintains accountability for processes to ensure prompt and responsive communication with parents and community stakeholders.

Assists the Director of Special Education in development and oversight of the annual budget.

Qualifications Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education Bachelor’s Degree

Experience Minimum of seven (7) years of successful experience in progressively responsible positions and administrative or program supervision

Licenses and Certifications Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with endorsements in one or more areas of special education and/or related fields; administrative endorsement and/or special education leadership certificate

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated expertise in instructional design, data analytics and specialized instructional programming

Experience in leadership/administration for specialized instructional programs in a public‑school setting

Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community

Strong problem‑solving, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated experience in collaborative teamwork

Strong ability to organize, analyze and display data in several reporting formats

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree preferred
