Overview The United States Capitol Police safeguards Congress, its members, employees, and visitors while ensuring facilities remain secure.
Responsibilities
Provide personal security to Members of Congress and other protectees, including domestic and international travel coordination, security surveys, and on‑ground protection.
Perform protective coverage for congressional events (hearings, sessions, official functions).
Investigate violations of the D.C. Code and Title 18 of the U.S. Code, including criminal, terroristic activity, and threats against Congress and its protectees.
Collect, evaluate, interpret, and disseminate intelligence and investigative information.
Prepare written reports such as investigations, assessments, and bulletins.
Coordinate investigative and operational efforts with other law‑enforcement agencies.
Conduct surveillance, detection, and counter‑surveillance operations.
Serve arrest and search warrants and liaise with judicial officials.
Qualifications
Must have completed the FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or an equivalent training program from the FBI, DEA, or U.S. Postal Inspection Service; provide certificate or transcript.
Current law‑enforcement officer with at least 9 months of experience post‑training and 52 weeks of experience at appointment.
Must be a United States citizen.
Must hold a valid Top Secret/SCI security clearance (or be able to obtain one).
High School diploma or GED certificate required.
Requirements
Travel required – domestic and international assignments.
Valid U.S. driver’s license (not revoked or suspended for the past 12 months); Real ID required.
Must pass comprehensive background, criminal, credit, and tax checks; full field background investigation required.
Must pass psychological, medical, and polygraph examinations.
Must successfully complete required training (Basic Agent or Investigations Training Program); a 1‑year probationary period applies.
Drug test required: Yes.
Male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service; female applicants are exempt.
