INTERVIEWER/ TRANSLATOR

Position Overview
Location: MDH – Somerset County Health Department, 8928 Sign Post Road, Westover, MD 21871.
Main Purpose: This position is responsible for interpreting/translating English to/from Spanish for the Hispanic community. The employee is considered essential and must be available to report to work during an emergency or catastrophic event.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Six months of experience providing formal interpretation and translation services between English and a second language. Formal interpretation services may include documented work as a volunteer interpreter for a nonprofit, human service, or faith‑based organization.
Notes:
Candidates may substitute additional experience interpreting and translating between English and a second language on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in Linguist or Language Capability classifications or Linguist or Language Capability specialty codes in the Linguistic field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Select Qualifications
The selected candidate must be certified as a medical interpreter.
Desired or Preferred Qualifications
Proficient technical skills (Google, Microsoft, Excel)
Strong written and oral communication skills
Good time‑management skills
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Employees may be assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle. Those assigned such duties must possess a valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland.
