Mechanical Designer
Corning Incorporated, Painted Post, NY, United States
Overview
Role Purpose: Design and develop mechanical systems that enable advanced technologies to transition from research and development into scalable, production-ready manufacturing solutions. This role focuses on translating early concepts into robust mechanical designs that perform reliably in high-volume manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
Design precision mechanical components, assemblies, and subsystems for advanced manufacturing equipment.
Collaborate across mechanical, process, controls, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet functional, quality, and production requirements.
Support the evolution of designs from early development and prototyping through pilot builds and manufacturing deployment.
Apply sound engineering judgment to ensure designs are robust, serviceable, and scalable.
Partner with suppliers and fabrication partners to refine designs for manufacturability and cost effectiveness.
Contribute to troubleshooting, design iteration, and continuous improvement as systems transition into production use.
Required Experience & Attributes
Strong experience designing mechanisms, structures, and assemblies intended for production use—not just prototypes.
Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines (process, controls, manufacturing, quality) to deliver integrated solutions.
Technical credibility that enables influence across teams, functions, and partner organizations.
Experience supporting the transition of technologies from R&D or pilot environments into manufacturing.
Comfortable working in environments where requirements evolve as learning progresses.
Must be available for significant travel, primarily domestic, to multiple locations to support business needs. International travel could be required as well.
Preferred Capabilities
Minimum Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline
8+ years of applied mechanical design experience in manufacturing, automation, or industrial equipment environments. Will consider less years of experience with advanced degree.
Experience designing for automation, precision assembly, or high-throughput manufacturing systems.
Familiarity with tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for reliability.
Experience collaborating with external suppliers, integrators, or contract manufacturers.
Strong CAD proficiency and experience managing design documentation through release and revision cycles.
This position does not support immigration sponsorship.
The range for this position is $95,227.00 - $130,938.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
