Deputy Labor Commissioner II – Bureau of Field Enforcement (BOFE) The Deputy Labor Commissioner II reports to a Deputy Labor Commissioner Supervisor and leads investigations and enforcement of California labor laws, including workers’ compensation, child labor, cash pay, unlicensed contractors, minimum wage and overtime claims.

Responsibilities

Lead investigations on complex and sensitive cases involving enforcement of IWC orders and labor laws.

Serve as a subject‑matter expert on specific industries and labor law violations.

Mentor and train lower‑level staff on subject‑matter expertise.

Lead projects to develop tools and strategies that improve investigation effectiveness and operational efficiency.

Collaborate with other government entities on group claim investigations and prosecutions.

Qualifications

Eligible for state employment (employment list, transfer, or reinstatement).

Valid education or experience meeting the minimum qualifications for the classification.

Strong analytical, investigative, and communication skills.

Working Conditions The position is located at 1515 Clay Street, Suite 801, Oakland, CA 94612. Duties are performed in an office and field setting, requiring travel and use of a state vehicle, laptop, and other equipment. Field work may involve exposure to uneven surfaces, high‑rise buildings, extreme weather, and other hazards.

Special Requirements Willingness to travel and work irregular hours.
