Pet Stylist – Responsibilities
Provide professional grooming services including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning.
Operate and maintain grooming instruments such as clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers.
Prioritize the safety and well‑being of every animal, monitor for comfort, illness or injury, and promptly report concerns to pet owners or store management.
Evaluate individual pet needs based on coat type, skin condition and temperament to deliver appropriate grooming care.
Interact professionally with pet parents to provide customer service, address inquiries, offer grooming recommendations, and resolve concerns in a timely manner.
Educate pet parents on at‑home grooming maintenance and care practices to promote overall pet health.
Maintain a clean and safe grooming area, disinfecting and sanitizing all tools and equipment and performing daily and weekly cleaning duties in accordance with pet‑care hygiene policies.
Apply Petco grooming policies, standards and guidelines to ensure safety, quality and consistency across all salon activities.
Support and supervise entry‑level trainees when the Grooming Salon Leader is unavailable.
Education and Experience
Successful completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program with Petco or prior experience as a professional groomer and/or completion of a technical grooming training program.
High‑school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
Independent judgement and problem‑solving abilities in routine to moderately complex grooming situations, with guidance from leadership when necessary.
Results‑driven with strong commitment to productivity, performance and ownership of the grooming role.
Strong attention to detail, ensuring grooming services are executed accurately to the highest standards.
Genuine passion for animals and desire to pursue a career in pet grooming.
Expert knowledge of various dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues, demeanor and behavior.
High proficiency in breed‑specific cuts, styling techniques and industry grooming standards.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interactions with pet parents and team members.
Ability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
Availability to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required by the grooming schedule.
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors in a grooming salon.
Requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds) and standing for extended periods.
May involve exposure to heights using a two‑step ladder or other support tools.
Workplace can be noisy and wet, with frequent direct contact with pet parents and their dogs.
