Duties Description

In cases of malfunction or breakdown, discuss the problem with the user, visually inspect the fixtures or equipment, and use appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble. Following technical manuals, codes, diagrams and previous experience, plan work procedures to make repairs and order replacement parts indicating quality, type and any other materials required. Make necessary repairs or adjustments or direct others in performing such activities. Install or direct the installation of plumbing fixtures and appliances following diagrams, codes and previous experience. Plan and lay out the installation, alteration, and repair of high‑ and low‑pressure pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. Plan new installations, alterations to existing installations, and major repairs consistent with specifications, plans and plumbing codes. Review building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required, and sequence of installation. Locate and mark the position of pipes, pipe connections, and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors and cut openings required to accommodate pipes and fittings. According to plan, measure, cut, thread and bend pipe to required angle. Assemble and install a variety of metal and nonmetal pipe and pipe fittings. Join piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused or cemented joints. Test pipe system for leaks by filling with liquid or air and reading pressure gauges. May weld holding fixtures to steel members. May draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale from oral or written instructions to accomplish the project. From blueprints or specifications, may estimate labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary for the project. Assemble materials, tools and equipment required to complete the work according to plans. May supervise and instruct others in performing plumbing and steamfitting work. Assign work to plumbing crew. Give verbal instructions and/or demonstrate proper plumbing techniques and the use of plumbing and steamfitting tools and equipment. Observe and inspect work while in progress and when completed to ensure the work is done properly. Minimum Qualifications

Four years of full‑time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, including completion of a relevant two‑year trade program or apprenticeship such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association–Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. Successful completion of the two‑year Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter traineeship is also acceptable. When required, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle to be operated. Successful completion of the traineeship includes 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework, with a “C” or better average, and 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training. Additional training details for each trainee level: Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 1 (equivalent to SG‑9): Grade 12 or below, 18 years or older, High School diploma or GED, proficient in English and math. Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 2 (equivalent to SG‑11): Completion of a 52‑week probationary period as Trainee 1 or equivalent coursework and 2,000 hours of on‑the‑job training, with a “C” average. Salary range listed below encompasses the hiring rate of a Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 1 through the job rate of a Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter. Candidates hired at the trainee level will be advanced to the full performance Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter, SG‑12 following successful completion of the traineeship. Salary: Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 1: $42,641 Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 2: $47,695 Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter: $50,425 – $61,548 For CSEA positions: Local Bidding Agreements will be honored.
