Position Summary The Director of Development provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization's fundraising efforts. This role is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy with a primary focus on expanding our donor base, while also strengthening annual giving, monthly giving and donor engagement efforts, including events. Grant identification and writing are also a focus of this role.
The Director of Development is a sole contributor who sets a compelling vision for results‑driven fundraising, and ensures day‑to‑day operations align with long‑term goals. This position also plays a key role in directing efforts to modernize development systems, improve data capture and analysis, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and mission alignment. The director works with the executive director, the development committee and individual board members.
This dynamic position reports directly to the executive director and offers significant collaboration with Program, Operations, Communications and Finance teams. Primarily in‑person, the role provides flexibility for remote work. Evening and weekend attendance at special events and programs is expected. The ideal candidate is an experienced relational fundraiser, has created fundraising strategies, and has grown a donor base.
Key Responsibilities Fundraising Strategy & Leadership
Develop, manage, execute and report on a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes donor solicitation and stewardship, special events and initiatives, grants, direct mail, Board fundraising and annual, seasonal and capital campaigns.
Provide strategic leadership for donor engagement, campaign planning, and development initiatives.
Work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to cultivate, solicit and steward relationships with current, former and potential funders and agency leaders.
Grant Development & Institutional Support
Oversee grant research, proposal writing, and reporting to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
Identify local, state and national funding opportunities.
Provide strategy and support for the organization’s general operating, program and capital campaigns.
Serve as a representative for the organization; frequently communicating with a variety of audiences about the mission, vision, values and goals of HI4Y.
Assist the Communications Coordinator in language and materials used to communicate with external audiences.
Events & Campaigns
Leads semi‑annual fundraising campaigns, including concept, material creation, goals, marketing, reporting results and thanking donors.
Provide leadership for major fundraising events and alumni engagement initiatives.
Support capital campaigns or other special initiatives as needed.
Board & Volunteer Engagement
Partner with the Board of Directors, Fundraising Committee and Executive Director to explore, design and execute strategies to increase individual giving, expand the donor base, grow monthly giving and increase the visibility of the organization.
Equip board members and volunteers with tools, printed materials and strategies to be effective ambassadors and fundraisers.
Operations & Data Management
Oversee development operations, including donor database management, gift processing, and reporting.
Ensure accurate tracking of donor activity, engagement, and progress toward revenue goals.
Provide detailed and timely donor reports to the executive director as well as individual board members regarding their respective donors.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum of 3‑4 years of professional experience in not‑for‑profit fundraising with a solid understanding of the workings of a Development Department required.
Proven ability to work and communicate with executive, managerial staff, individual Board members, committees and other volunteer supporters to achieve fundraising goals.
Proficiency with and ability to learn various types of computer software (DonorPerfect, Microsoft Office Suite) and background is using social media.
Strong analytical and quantitative abilities.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills. (Grant writing a plus)
Willingness to work additional hours during critical times, including some evenings and weekends. Ability to travel within the Greater New York area.
Passion for youth development or experience with a similar organization is a plus.
